Two years ago, Internet traffic was distributed evenly among a dozen <b>Tier-1</b> network providers, but today the majority of traffic flows through direct peering agreements among large content providers, content delivery networks and ISPs.&nbsp;</div><div style="text-align: justify;">&nbsp;<a name='more'></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Consequently, Tier-1 networks have shifted their business models from simple packet delivery to richer cloud computing and content hosting services, and new players Google and Comcast have joined the top 10 list of Internet traffic producers — and the more traffic they put on the Internet, the more control it gives them over your online experience.<br /></div><br /><a href="http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=4919771110851881744"></a> <br /><br />Traffic is growing much faster than the 50 percent year-to-year rate found by studies such as the <b>Minnesota Internet Traffic Study</b>; yet the “exaflood” of video traffic hasn’t drowned the Internet because network operators have found more efficient paths. The dramatic shift in traffic patterns has to do with the rise of what Arbor calls “the Hyper Giants,” 30 large companies that contribute 30 percent of Internet traffic. Thanks to YouTube, Google alone is responsible for 7 percent of all the traffic on today’s Internet, which puts it in the privileged position of prioritizing its VoIP and video calling services over YouTube without FCC permission.<br /><br />The onslaught of video is also changing the nature of peering agreements. Traditionally, peering and so-called transit were very distinct from a revenue perspective: Peering agreements were “settlement free” arrangements in which packets changed hands between networks of roughly equal size and scope, but money didn’t. Fee-based network interconnects were confined to “transit agreements” in which a large network operator connected a small player to the entire Internet for a fee; peering is also strictly a “one network to one other network” arrangement. The new wrinkle is “paid peering” agreements in which a large operator permits direct connection for a small fee. Paid peering replaces transit fees that run $2-9 per Mbps with direct connection at $1-3, and enhances service, according to an article on Bill Norton’s “<b>Ask Dr. Peering</b>” web site which explains the value of Comcast’s paid peering and its potential collision with net neutrality regulations:<br /><br />Paid peering provides better performance than transit, since the traffic takes a less circuitous route. Paid peering allows Google competitors to more easily compete with Google on performance and price without having to reach Google scale.<br /><br />But paid peering may be forbidden by <b>Question 106</b> of the FCC’s proposed Open Internet rules because it’s essentially two-tiered network access, Norton points out.<br /><br />Paid peering illustrates how hard it is to write an anti-discrimination rule for the Internet that doesn’t have harmful side effects for all but the largest content networks. Paid peering is a better level of access to an ISP’s customers for a fee, but the fee is less than the price of generic access to the ISP via a transit network. The practice of paid peering also reduces the load on the Internet core, so what’s not to like? Paid peering agreements should be offered for sale on a non-discriminatory basis, but they certainly shouldn’t be banned.<br /><br />Video is rising on the Internet, with more of it coming from legal sources such as content delivery networks and less from piracy-oriented systems like eDonkey and BitTorrent. Regulators need to look before they leap into wholesale bans on practices like paid peering that enable the Internet to carry increasing volumes of traffic. In short, it loses the original feel of Rock Band. Developed by a firm named RG Entertainment, Bobble Rep was a database of contact information of all the US senators. Users may find the senators representing them either through zipcode or with the help of GPS services. All in all, a very handy tool for anyone to learn about or contact their elected representatives.<br /><br />However, there was one thing that Apple did not feel amusing about the app. Each of the 540 senators had been represented with a caricature, the head of which bobbled when you shake your iPhone or flicked the head of the image. Though it is pretty harmless humor, the <a href="http://www.iphonehacks.com/iphone_applications/">iPhone app</a> approval staff found it objectionable and the app was rejected.<br /><br />In a blog post written early last week, Mad Magazine caricaturist Tom Richmond, who had drawn all the caricatures for Bobble Rep, wrote<br /><br />"This is the very reason that Apple as a company should be taken to task over its ludicrous and inconsistent app approval policies. Clearly this app does not “ridicule public figures” and is violating nothing"<br /><br />However, Richmond has now announced that Apple has retracted its earlier stance and has now approved the app. So what has caused this almost instantaneous reaction from Apple? While Richmond attributes it to the media outrage that followed his blog article, it looks more like Apple had realized that the <a href="http://www.iphonehacks.com/iphone_apps_banned_or_removed/">app rejection</a> was more likely the case of an error in judgement by an app approval staff member rather than an actual violation of Apple's terms.<br /><br />There have been several instances in the past when approval or rejection of apps stirred a controversy. Apple has stood its ground when they feel they are right and have relented when they feel otherwise. Bobble Rep seemingly belongs to the latter case.<br /><br />With the App approval procedure already in an uninspiring state of affairs, do you think that the erring approval staff are making it much more difficult for Apple? This is significant since Hewitt was pretty much solely responsible for one of the most popular (<a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/08/18/facebook-30-may-be-the-most-useful-app-on-the-iphone-yet/">and best</a>) iPhone apps out there: Facebook’s. And now, just a little over a week later, we may be seeing the downside of Hewitt’s decision.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=4919771110851881744"></a> <br /><a name='more'></a><br />The Facebook iPhone app is broken [updates below, it appears to be an API problem], and has been for a while now. Every single user profile page contains zero updates or posts. Instead, each loads a stream that reads “USER has no recent posts.” Judging from Twitter <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=+iphone+no+recent+posts">searches<img src="http://i.ixnp.com/images/v6.16/t.gif" /></a>, tips coming in, and a Facebook <a href="http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=8576093908&amp;topic=11454">thread</a>, this has been the case since at least yesterday, and possibly before that.<br /><br />To be clear, Facebook’s main News Feed is still being populated with updated items, but if you want to see elements from any individual user, you’re out of luck. And that’s bad when one key feature of the iPhone app is the ability to pin friends’ profiles to your main screen in order to more easily access such information. And it’s really bad when, again, this is one of the most popular apps that there is.<br /><br />After Hewitt’s decision to stop iPhone development, Facebook’s VP of Communications <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/person/elliot-schrage">Elliot Schrage<img src="http://i.ixnp.com/images/v6.16/t.gif" /></a> left us a comment <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/11/12/facebook-vp-leaves-a-lover-letter-for-apple/">reaffirming Facebook’s commitment</a> to Apple and, in particular, their iPhone app. He wrote that Facebook “has a great team of engineers taking over iPhone related development.”<br /><br />So a full team has replaced Hewitt, but they can’t seem to keep the app from breaking. And I’m not sure they even realize it is broken. But plenty of users do.<br /><br />Update: In an email, a member of Facebook’s communication team confirmed the issue and says they’ve alerted the engineering team. But I’m still wondering how Facebook’s new iPhone “team” could have either missed this issue or have let it go unresolved for a day or so now?<br /><br />How many Facebook developers does it take to fix an app? We’ll find out, I guess. The answer should be one: Hewitt. But Apple may be evading some of the consequences.<br /><br />Analysts at Sanford C. Bernstein this week highlighted what they characterize as a kind of licensing loophole affecting the hit iPhone, which they say puts a limit on the amount of money that flows into Qualcomm’s bank account. Explaining how the analysts arrived at it requires a short dive into Qualcomm’s business model.<br />The San Diego company helped develop one of two major technologies for digital cellular networks. Though a minority of the market initially, Qualcomm’s patents cover key aspects of newer third-generation networks. So companies delivering 3G products pay patent royalties to the company, which are widely believed to average a little less than 5% of the wholesale price of a cellphone. (Precise terms are negotiated confidentially, and can reflect factors such as patents that Qualcomm might want to license from the handset maker). <br />Qualcomm’s Web site lists more than 145 licensees, including all major makers of 3G handsets. The one glaring omission is Apple, whose iPhone uses 3G networks and is the biggest name in smartphones. One name that is listed is Foxconn, the Taiwan-based company that manufactures iPhones for Apple.<br /><iframe border="0" frameborder="0" height="280" marginheight="0" marginwidth="1" name="0" scrolling="no" src="http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/2442289_seva7/adsense.html" width="336"></iframe><br />Sacconaghi and Rasgon say the royalties paid to Qualcomm are based on the price Apple pays Foxconn for each iPhone–about $244, they estimate–not the wholesale price that Apple charges carriers like AT&amp;T for iPhones, which they say averages about $590. Assuming those prices and a 4% royalty rate, they estimate that Foxconn pays Qualcomm about $9.70 per iPhone–compared to $23.60 per phone that Apple might pay directly, based on the higher wholesale price. <br />Why couldn’t other handset makers get the same deal? Most others build some of their own cellphones internally, or for some other reason have signed a licensing deal with Qualcomm, Rasgon says. (Once they are licensees, the licensing fee they negotiate holds for all the handsets they sell–wherever they are made, he adds). <br />Apple, by contrast, was a new entrant to the market with the iPhone and relies completely on an external manufacturer–and does not have a licensing relationship with Qualcomm. “Apple among handset vendors is in a unique position,” Rasgon says.<br />As to whether Qualcomm might try to press Apple for more royalties–or have any legal basis for trying to do so–is unclear, Rasgon and Sacconaghi say. One factor that could weigh into Qualcomm’s thinking is that Apple is a potential user of Qualcomm chips, and a supplier seldom likes to irk a customer. On the other hand, Apple has been building up its own internal chip design capability as a result of its 2008 purchase of a startup called P.A. Semi.<br />So no change in the two companies’ relationship seems imminent. But it’s worth paying attention, because the dollars that fly around can get pretty large. What you get for the lock screen are a digital clock, a customizable wallpaper and an “Unlock” slider. That’s it. However, we think we can make a better use of the lock screen. <br /><br /><br />Jay Freeman, the creator of cydia, recently announced the release of Cydget for jailbroken iPhone. Cydget provides a comprehensive replacement for Winterboard lock widget, allowing developers and web designer to take control of the lock screen. Developers can make use of Cydget and creates interesting widgets by using either native code or HTML with javascript.<br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><br />How to Install and Use Cydget<br /><br /><br />As an iPhone user, you do not need to understand all those technical terms. What you need to know is how to install Cydget and other interesting Cydget-enabled widgets on your jailbroken. To install Cydget, simply fire up the Cydia app and search for “Cydget”. Then tap the “Install” button to install it.<br /><br /><br />After installation, reboot your iPhone and you’ll then find your lock screen is changed with a welcome message shown, which means Cydget is installed and activated properly. <br /><br /><br /><img src="http://www.simonblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/cydget-welcome-screen.jpg" /><br /><br />Cydget does not appear as a normal application on iPhone. You’ll find three cydgets (PhotoExample, Welcome, AwayView) available, which are come with the Cydget installation.
